Complementary Medicine

At PIH Health, we care about your overall health and well-being during your cancer care and beyond. That’s why we offer services that can help you deal with common side effects of cancer treatment, such as stress, anxiety, pain, nausea and fatigue. Such care is referred to as complementary medicine. It has been shown to help many people heal better and faster.

The Complementary Medicine department of the Ruby L. Golleher Comprehensive Community Cancer Program provides services that many cancer patients find helpful during their cancer care, including:

  • Yoga for Healing
  • Guided meditation for radiation therapy

Yoga for Healing

Our Yoga for Healing classes are open to everyone at any level and priced to be affordable. They are designed especially for cancer patients or those with health challenges. In this gentle exercise program, you’ll learn easy yoga stretches and meditative breathing techniques. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat. Chairs are available for balance or seated yoga, if needed.

Benefits of Yoga for Healing

  • Stress reduction
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased energy and promotion of positive self-image

Check our calendar of events to sign up for a Yoga for Healing class or contact the Complementary Medicine department at 562.698.0811 Ext. 12777 for more information.

Reflexology

Reflexology is gently applied pressure to the hands and feet. It helps relax the body and reduce stress. As a benefit for our cancer patients, we offer reflexology sessions free of charge to inpatients and infusion center patients during their visits. Ask your nurse about scheduling a session with a reflexologist or contact the Complementary Medicine department at 562.698.0811 Ext. 12777 for more information.

Guided Meditation for Radiation Therapy

Guided meditation is a free service offered to radiation therapy patients at the Cancer Center. Studies show that how you think about your treatment plays a vital role in its success. Designed specifically for patients receiving radiation therapy, Guided Meditation uses a digital audio recording that helps you prepare for treatment by visualizing the radiation experience in positive ways.

Benefits of Guided Meditation

  • Helps you relax
  • Provides positive visualization techniques
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Promotes a sense of well being

Sessions are available any time. Talk to your nurse to schedule a guided meditation session or contact the Complementary Medicine department at 562.698.0811 Ext. 12777 for more information.
