Antioxidant Rich Foods

Antioxidant-rich Foods

Antioxidant Rich FoodsGood nutrition plays an important role in a person’s health and well-being. A diet rich in antioxidant foods is one solution to achieving good nutrition, a key component in achieving optimal health.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that remove oxidation from our bodies. The most common antioxidant is vitamin C. According to Stanford Medicine, antioxidants help protect our body from harmful free radicals.

Consuming foods rich in antioxidants will help enhance your health just like drinking enough water does. What goes in our bodies really does matter.

What foods contain antioxidants?

Foods that are rich in antioxidants are also rich in color—think of a rainbow. Each meal should be colorful. The Mayo Clinic describes antioxidant-rich foods as “colorful fruits and vegetables, such as leafy greens, avocados, beets and berries.” Try to get a variety of colors—green, red, orange, yellow and purple—all have different antioxidants present.

Antioxidant-rich foods:

  • Apples such as Red Delicious, Granny Smith and Gala
  • Peppers
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Papaya
  • Berries such as cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.
  • Broccoli
  • Beets
  • Artichokes
  • Leafy greens such as spinach and kale
  • Avocados
  • Lentils
  • Beans such as kidney and pinto
  • Nuts such as pecans and walnuts

When planning for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, build in some color and add in some antioxidant-rich foods. These foods are healthy, easy to prepare and delicious!
