Blood Donor Center

Blood Donor Center

The demand for blood is constant, but the need is even greater during the holiday season. A single blood donation may help as many as three people. Each pint of blood can be separated into various components like red cells, plasma and platelets, which are given to patients with different needs.  More than 50% of the people in our community qualify to be donors, but only 5% give regularly.

Donating blood is safe and easy at the PIH Health Blood Donor Center. On average it takes about 35 to 45 minutes from start to finish depending on the individuals health assessment and blood flow.  Blood can be donated every 56 days. It takes only 24 hours to replenish the volume lost from a donation and less than two months to replace red blood cells.

Red blood cells have a shelf life of about 42 days unless they are frozen, which is an expensive process reserved mostly for cases involving hard-to-find blood types. At the PIH Health Donor Center, the donated blood rarely stays on the shelf for more than 10 days. When blood is donated to PIH Health it stays at PIH Health Hospitals.

Although more than half of the population can donate blood, there are a few restrictions. You will not be able to donate blood if you have a history of hepatitis, cancer within the last year (except skin cancer), chronic cough, chest pain, shortness of breath or are at high risk of HIV/AIDS. You will also be temporarily deferred if you are sick, are on certain medications, have had dental surgery within the last 72 hours, have had a recent tattoo or piercing or have traveled to areas at risk for malaria within the last year. For any questions regarding eligibility please contact the Blood Donor Center.

Make the difference of a lifetime.
