Can Reusing Water Bottles Be Harmful to Your Health?

plastic water bottlesReusing plastic drink bottles may sound like an eco-friendly concept, but it can actually be harmful to your health. According to Danielle Halewijn, clinical nutrition manager at PIH Health, the following concerns should be considered when reusing water bottles:

  • When the bottles come in contact with hands and mouths, bacteria is introduced.  When they are reused, the likelihood of impurities increases because bacteria may be present and growing.
  • Another concern is leaching. Some plastics contain chemicals such as PET  (polyethylene terephthalate) and BPA  (bisphenol A) which can cause cancer, cardiovascular problems or diabetes. Bottles that contain these chemicals may leach, or allow unwanted chemicals to seep into the water over time.
  • If you must reuse a plastic bottle, be sure to wash it with warm soapy water and allow it to dry before reuse. This will help minimize exposure to bacteria. However, repeating this process for reuse should be limited due to the potential breakdown and release of chemical compounds that can occur after multiple washings.
  • The best thing to do is find safe alternatives for reuse. There are many great options available that are BPA free. Consider making the switch to stainless steel or glass bottles which are considered the safest options.

To do your part and be environmentally friendly, remember to recycle any used water bottles.
