An ounce of prevention - and the right sunscreen - will help keep you safe in the sun

woman applying sunscreenCan’t imagine heading to the beach without sunscreen? Good for you! Year-round use of sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect against the damaging effects of the sun.
Too much exposure to the sun can lead to wrinkles, sun spots and even skin cancer.
But remember, you need to apply it right to be sure you are protected. This is especially true during the summer months when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

How to Apply Sunscreen

  1. Choose an SPF 30 or higher that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Your sunscreen should be water resistant as well.
  2. Apply about an ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen, which is about the size of the palm of your hand. Put it on about 30 minutes before you go outside, and take time to rub it in.
  3. Cover all the bases. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, remembering the hard-to-reach places and areas like your ears and tops of feet. Also ask for help applying to areas you can’t reach, or use a spray product.
  4. Reapply after swimming, sweating, or every 90 minutes to 2 hours.
  5. Check the label. Make sure your sunscreen hasn’t expired.
