PIH Health Receives Accreditation From College of American Pathologists

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to PIH Health Whittier Hospital in recognition of their overall excellence and adherence to safety standards based on results of a recent on-site inspection.

“PIH Health is truly honored to be recognized by the College of American Pathologists for the scope of high-quality healthcare provided by our pathologists and laboratory professionals,” said Peter Truong MS CLS MT(ASCP/AMT), director of the Pathology and Laboratory Department at PIH Health Whittier Hospital. “This accreditation reinforces our ongoing commitment to the constant surveillance of laboratory measures to deliver high quality test results for the benefit of our patients and the physicians who treat them.”

PIH Health Whittier Hospital is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide to receive this national recognition.

“We are proud to offer nationally recognized services to our community,” said James R. West, PIH Health president and chief executive officer. “This achievement is well deserved and demonstrates PIH Health’s dedication to meeting standards of excellence, as well as the outstanding contributions of the Pathology and Laboratory department in providing the highest quality services for our patients.”

The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

“The CAP is pleased to recognize PIH Health Whittier Hospital as meeting the high standard set as part of the CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program,” said Richard M. Scanlan MD FCAP, chair of the CAP’s Council on Accreditation. “PIH Health Whittier Hospital joins the thousands of others that are committed to raising the quality of laboratory services nationally and internationally.”
