PIH Health Downey Hospital Shares Information About Updates and Future Plans with Public Officials

Improvements at the hospital will benefit patients, staff and community members for years to come

On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, PIH Health hosted a tour of its Downey hospital campus to provide an update, since the October 1, 2013 acquisition, on refurbishments that have already occurred as well as to advise of future plans that will benefit the community and staff. The tour highlighted many recent and planned improvements such as a future lobby remodel, patient room upgrades, Emergency Department expansion plans, Imaging Center improvements and current retrofitting.

Local public officials met with PIH Health Executive leadership members: Jim West, PIH Health president and chief executive officer; Brian Smolskis PIH Health Downey Hospital chief operating officer; and Rosalio Lopez MD MBA PIH Health senior vice president and chief medical officer to discuss the recent renovations and future plans for the Downey campus. Downey Chief of Staff Richy Agajanian MD, as well as Chair of the PIH Health Board of Directors Kenton Woods were also in attendance.

Downey Mayor Fernando Vasquez and his fellow Council Members along with Downey Chamber President Patricia Kotze, President-Elect Elizabeth Trombley and Executive Director Carlos Cruz talked with PIH Health leadership about collaborating to improve community health.

PIH Health Downey Hospital is one of two hospitals in the PIH Health integrated delivery system.

"This hospital has been a cornerstone and resource in the community for more than 90 years – and PIH Health plans to preserve that legacy by continuing to offer quality hospital care," said PIH Health Downey Hospital Chief Operating Officer Brian Smolskis. "The guidance and support of our many dedicated employees has played an integral role and will continue to be critical during this time of transition."

With the addition of Downey, PIH Health has increased its reach to the population it serves by more than half a million; growing from 1.5 million to now more than 2.1 million residents in the Los Angeles, Orange County and San Gabriel Valley region.

"Our goal is to ensure PIH Health Downey Hospital is the premier hospital in the area as we are committed to upgrades that will help the hospital campus further enhance quality, safety and efficiency," said PIH Health President and Chief Executive Officer Jim West.

This fiscal year alone, October 1, 2013 – September 30, 2014, PIH Health will invest $19 million dollars for capital improvements at its Downey campus.
