PIH Health hosts Hands-Only CPR Training in Honor of National CPR Week

Free Training to Be Held on June 5, 2014

PIH Health, in conjunction with Los Angeles County Fire, will provide free hands-only CPR training on Sidewalk CPR day, Thursday, June 5 at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, 12401 Washington Blvd. from 9 am to 12 noon. Last year, more than 5,000 people throughout the county learned how to save a life in just five minutes with a quick lesson from local firefighters and medical professionals.

Hands-only CPR focuses on what to do within the first few minutes following a cardiac arrest, since the lungs and blood contain only enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for that amount of time. While emergency responders are on their way to the scene, chest compressions using hands-only CPR will provide the ongoing blood flow needed to give the patient a much better chance of survival once responders arrive.

"PIH Health encourages community members to take an active role in the health of the public by being prepared should an emergency arise," said PIH Health Whittier Hospital Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Carole Snyder RN.

Currently in Los Angeles County, less than three percent of the nearly 383,000 sudden cardiac arrest victims survive. Only 32 percent of victims receive CPR from a bystander. Don’t be a bystander in a cardiac emergency – be a lifesaver!

PIH Health believes strongly in emergency preparedness for everyone. The community is fortunate that PIH Health is a ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center for heart attack patients who are brought into the hospital by paramedics. PIH Health is also one of 13 Disaster Resource Centers (DRC) to 10 local hospitals and four clinics under Los Angeles County’s Hospital Preparedness Program.

The free hand-only CPR training will be conducted in the lobby of PIH Health Whittier Hospital. For more information on this event, please contact Carole Snyder RN at 562.698.0811 Ext. 17684.
