New Board of Directors Leadership, J. Richard Atwood Appointed as Chair

PIH Health, Inc. (PIH Health) is pleased to announce its fiscal year (FY) 2017-18 Board of Directors, which includes three new members: Alex Alvarez, Sanjiv Arora, and Blayne Cutler MD, PhD. The PIH Health Board of Directors has named J. Richard Atwood as the Chair, Edward Dunlap as Vice Chair, Paula Cowan as Secretary, and Jeffrey Hamar as Treasurer. Their terms began on October 1, 2017. The Board of Directors includes physicians and business and community leaders who meet each month to help guide the policies of PIH Health.

“Our Board members are highly-qualified individuals who will contribute their experience and best-practices to our enterprise,” said James West, president and chief executive officer, PIH Health. “Their leadership will help PIH Health provide outstanding care to our communities.”   

J. Richard Atwood, Chair, is the managing partner and chief operating officer of First Pacific Advisors, LLC (“FPA”)—an institutional money management firm based in Los Angeles. Atwood brings more than 29 years of experience in operational, accounting and administrative responsibilities as well as mutual funds, hedge funds, and institutional advisory accounts in his service to the PIH Health Board. Atwood is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Accounting from California State University, Long Beach.

New Board members Alex Alvarez, Blayne Cutler, MD PhD and Sanjiv Arora bring unique talents and experience to the Board.

Alex Alvarez is vice president of Corporate Development, Strategic Planning, and Treasurer for Motorcar Parts of America, Inc. A finance professional with extensive experience in rapid-growth and start-up companies for U.S. and international operations across 10 countries including Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, and Canada, Alvarez brings more than 27 years of experience in business development, accounting, and finance to the PIH Health Board. Alvarez has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics with an emphasis in accounting from University of California, Santa Barbara.

Blayne Cutler, MD, PhD is the president and chief executive officer, Public Health Foundation Enterprises—a $110 million national nonprofit agency with nearly 1,200 staff focused on population health. Cutler is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in HIV prevention and care and an infectious disease and public health physician with proven leadership in public health policy development and programmatic planning/implementation. Cutler has a Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University, a Doctorate in History from Yale University, a Medical Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University.

Sanjiv Arora is the vice president of Corporate Strategy for Irvine-based company, Edwards Lifesciences, Inc., where he is responsible for running the global strategic planning and business development functions for the $3 billion plus growth-oriented medical device firm focused on structural heart disease, heart failure, and critical care medicine. Arora has more than 24 years of experience in the strategic planning and business development sector and has served on many other boards in the healthcare, technology, and energy industries throughout the U.S. Arora has a Master of Business Administration from Duke University–Fuqua School Of Business (Durham, NC), a Master Of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University–Pratt School Of Engineering, (Durham, NC) and a Bachelor Of Science in Chemical Engineering from University Of Minnesota.

The FY 2017-18 PIH Health Board is comprised of 12 Directors: Alex Alvarez; J. Richard Atwood; Sanjiv Arora; Paula Cowan; Blayne Cutler MD, PhD; Jane Dicus; Edward Dunlap; Jeffrey Hamar; Patrick Monroe; Charlotte Weaver PhD; Kenton Woods; and Huey-Min Yu.
