PIH Health Awarded Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers from The Joint Commission

PIH Health Hospital - Whittier has once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Centers

The Whittier campus recently underwent a rigorous on-site review. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted on-site observations and interviews.

“Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers recognizes healthcare organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend PIH Health for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for stroke patients.”

“PIH Health is pleased to receive advanced certification from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association,” said Jeanette Abundis, RN MN CNS NE-BC, PIH Health administrator of Emergency and Disaster-Services. “The certification provides us with the framework to continue a culture of excellence and recognizes our commitment to putting our patients at the forefront of all we do.”

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

“We congratulate PIH Health for this outstanding achievement,” says Nancy Brown, chief executive officer, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. “This certification reflects its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for stroke patients.”

PIH Health initially received Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers in 2017. In addition, PIH Health’s stroke program has recently earned the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, and also qualified for recognition on the Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll. Additionally, the other hospital in the PIH Health system, PIH Health Hospital - Downey is a Primary Stroke Center.
