PIH Health Hospital - Whittier Achieves NICHE Senior-Friendly Status for its Efforts to Improve Care for Older Adults

PIH Health Hospital - Whittier has achieved senior-friendly status from Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE). The hospital has been a member of NICHE since 2014.

Senior-friendly status recognizes PIH Heath Hospital - Whittier’s ongoing dedication to geriatric care and the implementation of system-wide interventions and initiatives that demonstrate organizational commitment to high-quality care of older adult patients.

“On behalf of PIH Health, it is an honor to receive this recognition,” said Karen Profeta RN, MSN, interim chief nursing officer of PIH Health Hospital - Whittier. “Our patients are, and always will be, our motivation to deliver high-quality healthcare.”

Senior-friendly status is achieved when a member hospital implements the NICHE model principles and practices to develop age-friendly care for older adults through staff education. PIH Heath Hospital - Whittier submitted a comprehensive report of their program activities for review by NYU Meyers faculty, and based on pre-established criteria the faculty recommended ‘senior-friendly’ recognition.

PIH Health Hospital - Whittier’s goals for the NICHE Program in 2019 are to:

  • Expand the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) role by creating opportunities for leadership, innovation and teamwork.

  • Provide dedicated and specific education to patients, families, and staff regarding acute hospital acquired delirium.

  • Increase compliant usage of the BCAM (Brief Confusion Assessment Method) to 100 percent in acute patient care areas.

“PIH Heath Hospital - Whittier has demonstrated a tremendous ability to meet the needs of older adult patients,” says NICHE Executive Director, Mattia Gilmartin PhD, RN, FAAN. “The organization’s capacity to bring together geriatric nursing resources and support to enhance care, marks it as a rising leader in the field.”
