PIH Health Hospital - Whittier Marks 60th Anniversary

January 19, 2019 marks PIH Health Hospital - Whittier’s 60th anniversary. Since its beginning in 1959 as a single 188-bed hospital, PIH Health has evolved into a fully integrated healthcare delivery system, featuring 722 beds, more than 6,000 employees and over 700 exceptional physicians serving nearly 2.1 million residents in its service area—a population larger than 15 individual U.S. states. Today, the organization includes PIH Health Hospital - Whittier, PIH Health Hospital - Downey, PIH Health Physicians, five urgent care centers, home health, hospice, and 19 medical offices.

“Our future holds significant promise as we work strategically and passionately to offer the latest in medical advances delivered by knowledgeable and compassionate medical professionals for decades to come,” said James R. West, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of PIH Health.

“The most significant change has been technology—the world in general has adopted so many new digital tools and that has also been true for the healthcare industry, including PIH Health,” said Karen Profeta, RN, MSN, PIH Health Hospital - Whittier interim chief nursing officer who has worked for the organization for 27 years. “New state-of-the-art equipment allows for more rapid diagnoses and treatments and has enhanced communication, teamwork, and collaboration between our physicians and nurses to improve patient care.”

Additionally, the Whittier campus is a Top Designated Stroke Receiving Center in Los Angeles (LA) County, an LA Country STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarctions) Receiving Center, and an LA County designated Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). In 2005 PIH Health was designated as one of 11 Disaster Resource Centers (DRC) located in LA County and received a $561,500 LA Disaster Grant.

“Throughout its 60-year history, PIH Health Hospital - Whittier’s innovation and 'Patients First' vision has fostered continued improvement of its award-winning, quality healthcare,” explained West, who has served as CEO since 2004. “Whether through electronic records implementations, new construction, or through expansion of life-saving services, this organization aims to deliver the very best in healthcare.”
