Alexander K. Chow MD is a board-certified fellowship trained urologic surgeon who specializes in advanced robotic surgery for treatment of urological cancers (prostate, kidney, ureter, bladder) and upper urinary tract reconstruction.  He also treats patients with general urological conditions including benign prostate disease, kidney stones, urinary obstruction, sexual dysfunction, and vasectomies. 

Prior to his appointment at PIH Health, Dr. Chow served as an Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of Robotic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.  He was recognized as Educator of the Year in consecutive years for excellence in teaching and mentoring the next generation of urologists.  He has published over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts on surgical techniques and surgical outcomes and presented numerous abstracts on robotic surgery at regional, national, and international urological meetings.

Dr. Chow is committed to delivering compassionate and patient–centered care.  He takes pride in providing state of the art surgery and being available every step of the way for his patients.  He considers it a great privilege to join the family of PIH Health and is excited to serve the diverse neighborhoods within Los Angeles County and Orange County.

In his free time, he enjoys being active outdoors with his family including running, hiking, surfing, and skiing.  As a Chicago native, he is a passionate supporter of his city's sports teams - Go Bears, Bulls, and White Sox!

The provider was able to break down and explain the procedure very simple where I was able to understand and very attentive to the questions I had. And was able to provide all the information and feedback I needed to continue for the next process of the procedure.

For my first experience with the staff, the doctor, everyone in the office, it was great. I would highly recommend doctor. I will be having surgery through with him, so that proves my point. Yes, I was very pleased about my appointment and the time and the time that the doctor spent with me and the nurses that assisted me on the front staff. Everybody was great. I was given all the information I needed and I was very thankful with everyone I spoke to as well as my follow-up for my next, for my operation coming up. Dr. Alexander Chow is an outstanding physician who treated me with genuine care and compassion. From his thorough diagnosis and thoughtful questions to his clear explanations, I felt truly seen and respected. He is not only a skilled doctor but also a true gentleman and kind human being. My family and I felt as comfortable with him as if we were sitting with our own family ,he speaks with such warmth and respect, especially toward elders. My children researched him and confirmed he is highly regarded as one of the best in his field, and I can truly see why. What touched me most was his generosity: even though other doctors refused when I asked for medication samples, Dr. Chow kindly provided them multiple times.He asked me so kindly "Would you like more samples?" and gave me enough to last a while. Dr. Chow's office is wonderful. When I was diagnosed with my condition, it was very scary for me and I did not want to have to deal with it, but he put me at ease explaining everything to me before my first appointment when I got there and ever since then he's been very caring, very understanding and very active in my care. The girls in the office get me in as quickly as possible. They treat me with respect. The whole office does and this is my second family since this is a condition I'm always going to have to deal with. It's wonderful for me to know that they are always there for me no matter what. They make me feel like family. I know they care about their patients, every one of them, because I see how they are with all of us. And Dr. Chow is the absolute best. I couldn't ask for a better doctor. Thank you.

I had a good conversation with the doctor. It was definitley a change of pace from the last urologist I saw who was very gruff and curt with me. Dr. Chow listened to my symptoms and provided thoughtful feedback. It was much appreciated.

With regards to the question about appointment scheduling. PIH Physicians determine when they see the patient. Patient has little to say about when to see the doctor next. At least that has been my experience. My next appointment with Dr. Chow is for one year. My PSA test results were excellent so I will see doctor in 1 year. Seeing the Urology Doctor is much easier than seeing PIH Cardiology personnel. Three months waiting period to see doctor after making appointment. Then you go on the 6 month rotation schedule because cardiology doctors have a large patient load. That was what I was told. As a patient I'm not sure how a Cardiologist with a large patient load can possibly care for so many patients. For example I had a scheduled cardiology appointment then my appointment was rescheduled out for another three months because doctor moved his office. That will make a total of 9 months I will have waited to see the cardiologist. I was on the see you every 6 month rotation, then because of the move doctor's office tacked on another 3 months.

Dr. Chow is the kind of doctor who makes a real difference. From the moment you meet him, you feel seen, heard, and cared for. He has a calm, kind energy that puts you at ease right away, and he takes the time to explain everything clearly. He doesn't just treat you, he encourages you to take care of yourself and gives you the confidence to do it. I only wish I had met him before my surgery, but I'm incredibly grateful to have found such a compassionate and skilled urologist now.

The doctor was very friendly, nice handshake, brought in a colleague, I guess, for training experience. The only thing I would do is maybe clean the exam rooms a little bit better. Patients look around to see how they're kept. We noticed that the cloth for the chairs was laying on the ground. Not a big deal, but others may not think so.

Definitely Dr. Alexander Chow gave good information about my option of receiving BPH treatment. Started with a new medication- Oxybutynin to control my frequently urination at night q2 hours. Diagnostic Cystoscopy to see my bladder. And Proceed with possible Transurethral Resection of Prostate instead of Urolift to address my frequent nocturnal urination. I love his treatment plan. Looking forward to resolve my BPH issue.

Dr. Chow was fantastic. He was great. He made my 11-year-old son and other parents at ease. He explained to him, took his time, made him feel better about the whole situation. I highly recommend him for the follow-up. He was also fantastic. Not only at PIH at the hospital, but also follow up at his office. He was just such a wonderful human to work with. Again, he made my son feel at ease and he reassured us everything's going to be okay. And I highly recommend them to anyone who sees them. Thank you.
