Zachary R. Barnard MD MS is a neurosurgeon specializing in all types of brain tumors, skull base tumors, spine tumors, stroke, and vascular and neuroendovascular surgery. He is also an expert in pulsatile tinnitus, intracranial hypotension, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and all areas of spinal surgery.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Barnard received his Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he performed breast cancer translational research spawning his interest in medicine. Then he spent two years at Massachusetts General Hospital doing brain tumor immunotherapy research, which began his interest in neurosurgery. He completed his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where he was awarded the Ruth A. Mcllnay Oncology research fellowship and the American Brain Tumor Association Medical Student Fellowship in tribute to Kerrie Gulczynski-Long.

Dr. Barnard moved to Los Angeles, California to complete his Neurological Surgery residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. During this time, he was able to complete a Skull Base Surgery fellowship at the world-renowned House Clinic in Los Angeles. He returned to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to complete his fellowship in Neuroendovascular Surgery. During his residency and fellowships he was awarded two grant awards, the Medtronic Endovascular Neurosurgery Fellowship grant and the Codman Neuro™ Endovascular Neurosurgery Fellowship grant.

Dr. Barnard went into medicine to help people in dire situations where they are unable to help themselves. He chose neurological surgery because so much is unknown about the brain and neurological diseases can be devastating. His philosophy is to provide the highest quality care to those in need by giving people a holistic perspective on their treatment and to help them every step of the way.

His research interests include the budding field of endovascular neuro-oncology as well as clinical trial development, and translational research for brain tumors. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, invited articles, and presented at multiple national meetings. He has been an ad hoc reviewer for multiple journals including; Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, and Journal of Neurological Surgery Part B: Skull Base.

Outside medicine, Dr. Barnard loves to spend time with his wife and three children taking vacations, skiing, and cooking.
