Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib)
Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other complications. When the heart does not beat in a normal rhythm, blood may pool and increase the risk of clot formation.
At PIH Health, our heart and vascular specialists provide advanced care for A-fib, including innovative treatment options designed to restore heart rhythm and reduce stroke risk.
Advanced A-fib Treatment Options at PIH Health
To help manage atrial fibrillation, PIH Health offers advanced therapies such as pulsed field ablation (PFA) and device implantation, including the Watchman FLX, for patients who are unable to take long-term blood thinners.
Pulsed Field Ablation at PIH Health
An Innovative, Non-Thermal Option for Atrial Fibrillation
If you’re living with atrial fibrillation, pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a next-generation ablation technique that offers a precise, tissue-selective approach to restoring normal heart rhythm.
Unlike traditional ablation methods that use heat (radiofrequency) or cold (cryoablation), PFA uses pulsed electrical fields to target abnormal heart tissue while minimizing impact on surrounding healthy structures.
What Is Pulsed Field Ablation?
Pulsed field ablation treats A-fib by creating microscopic pores in the cell membranes of abnormal heart tissue. This selectively neutralizes the cells responsible for irregular electrical signals while sparing nearby organs such as the esophagus and phrenic nerves.
This targeted, non-thermal approach may result in shorter procedures, faster recovery, and fewer complications.
Benefits of Pulsed Field Ablation
- Non-thermal energy that avoids heat or cold-related injury
- Tissue selectivity that minimizes damage to healthy heart tissue
- Potentially shorter procedure and recovery time
- Minimally invasive, catheter-based approach
- Reduced post-procedure discomfort
- FDA-approved technology for treating A-fib
How Pulsed Field Ablation Works
During the procedure, an electrophysiologist inserts a catheter through a vein in the groin and guides it to the heart. Pulsed electrical fields are then delivered to precisely ablate the tissue causing irregular rhythms.
Because PFA is non-thermal, the risk of injury to surrounding structures is reduced. Most patients go home the same day and return to normal activities relatively quickly.
Is Pulsed Field Ablation Right for You?
You may be a candidate for pulsed field ablation if you:
- Have A-fib that has not responded to medications or prior procedures
- Are seeking a minimally invasive, non-thermal treatment option
- Want to reduce risks associated with traditional ablation techniques
Our care team will evaluate your condition and determine whether PFA is appropriate for your treatment plan.
Watchman FLX at PIH Health
A Safer Way to Help Prevent Stroke in A-fib Patients
For patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot take long-term blood thinners, the Watchman FLX device offers an alternative way to reduce stroke risk.
This minimally invasive implant seals off the left atrial appendage (LAA), where blood clots commonly form in A-fib patients.
What Is the Watchman FLX?

The Watchman FLX is a small, flexible implant designed to fit securely inside the left atrial appendage. By closing off the LAA, it prevents blood clots from entering the bloodstream while allowing many patients to discontinue long-term anticoagulant therapy.
Benefits of Watchman FLX
- Reduced risk of stroke in eligible A-fib patients
- Minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure
- Most patients can stop blood thinners within months
- Custom-fit design for individual heart anatomy
- FDA-approved for safety and effectiveness
How the Watchman FLX Works
The device is delivered through a catheter, typically via a vein in the leg, and placed within the left atrial appendage. Once positioned, it expands to seal off the LAA and prevent clot formation.
Over time, tissue grows over the device, permanently closing the appendage. Most patients return home the same day and resume normal activities shortly afterward.
Is Watchman FLX Right for You?
You may be a candidate for the Watchman FLX if you:
- Have non-valvular atrial fibrillation
- Are at increased risk of stroke
- Cannot tolerate long-term blood thinners
- Are seeking a permanent, non-pharmaceutical stroke-prevention option
