Tricuspid Regurgitation
Understanding Tricuspid Regurgitation (TR)
Tricuspid regurgitation is a heart valve condition that occurs when the tricuspid valve, the “door” between the heart’s right atrium and right ventricle, does not close tightly. When this happens, blood leaks backward instead of flowing forward to the lungs.
Over time, this extra strain can cause the right side of the heart to enlarge and weaken, leading to symptoms that interfere with daily life and, if left untreated, more serious heart problems.
Common Symptoms
- Shortness of breath, especially with activity
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, or abdomen
- Fatigue or weakness
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Abdominal fullness or discomfort
- Weight gain from fluid retention
If you experience these symptoms, it is important to speak with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can help protect your heart and improve your quality of life.
Treatment Options
At PIH Health, we offer advanced, minimally invasive procedures to treat tricuspid regurgitation, often without the need for open heart surgery. Your care team will carefully evaluate your condition and recommend the approach that is right for you.
Tricuspid Transcatheter Edge to Edge Repair (TEER)
Tricuspid TEER is a minimally invasive option for patients who may not be good candidates for traditional surgery. During the procedure, doctors guide a small device to the tricuspid valve through a thin tube called a catheter, usually inserted through a vein in the leg. The device gently brings the valve leaflets closer together so the valve can close more effectively, reducing backward blood flow.
Benefits of Tricuspid TEER:
- No open heart surgery
- Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery
- Relief from symptoms such as swelling and shortness of breath
- Improved daily function and quality of life
Transcutaneous Tricuspid Valve Replacement
When the tricuspid valve is too damaged to repair, transcutaneous tricuspid valve replacement may be recommended. In this procedure, doctors implant a new artificial valve inside the diseased valve using a catheter. The new valve restores proper blood flow and takes over the work of the failing valve.
Benefits of Tricuspid Valve Replacement:
- Provides a solution when repair is not possible
- Less invasive than open heart surgery
- Can significantly improve symptoms and heart performance
- Helps reduce fluid buildup and strain on the heart
Who May Benefit?
Tricuspid TEER and transcutaneous tricuspid valve replacement are typically considered for patients with moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation who may not be ideal candidates for open heart surgery due to factors such as:
- Age
- Other medical conditions
- Increased surgical risk
Your cardiology team will perform detailed imaging and testing to determine which treatment option is best for your heart and overall health.
