Tiny Steps, Giant Leaps: 50 Years of NICU Miracles!
Colin's Journey: A Story of Resilience and Hope
On November 29, 2006, Daniel and Kelly Salazar welcomed their only son Colin into the world at PIH Health Whittier Hospital. However, Colin's arrival was a week earlier than expected, landing him in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for seven days. Recalling those tense moments, Kelly shared, "I had a normal pregnancy until a week before his due date when I wasn't feeling him move.” Kelly called Joy Leong MD, PIH Health OB/GYN, who advised her to get immediate monitoring in the Labor and Delivery department.
Dr. Leong's quick action revealed Colin was in distress, requiring an emergency cesarean section. "Dr. Leong saved Colin's life," said Kelly. It turned out Colin's placenta was torn, depriving him of vital blood supply. Despite no prior indications, Colin's health was compromised, requiring a blood transfusion. "It wasn't what I imagined for my newborn, but knowing he was in great hands made all the difference. The NICU staff was amazing,” added Kelly.
Now 17, Colin thrives as a junior at La Habra High School, where he's on the junior varsity volleyball team and participates in the reserve officers’ training corps (ROTC) program. Exploring his interests in business and marketing, Colin is also considering joining the National Guard. "Colin is still deciding his path, but he's driven and determined," Kelly proudly stated.
Reflecting on Colin’s NICU journey, his dad, Daniel, marveled at his son's resilience. Despite the initial challenges, Colin's strength and the unwavering support of his family have propelled him forward. As Colin continues to thrive, his journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, showcasing the remarkable capacity of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger.
