Tiny Steps, Giant Leaps: 50 Years of NICU Miracles!
A Mother's Tale of Hope and Resilience: A Journey through the NICU
At 11:45 am on May 3, 1979, Kristyn Archer embarked on a journey she never anticipated. As the clock ticked towards her expected delivery time, fate had other plans in store. "I was about to go into the hospital when labor began," she recalls, reflecting on the pivotal moment that changed her life forever.
Concerns arose a few days before her due date when her doctor noticed a troubling sign – Kristyn wasn't gaining weight as expected. An X-ray revealed a distressing truth: her placenta and umbilical cord had failed to develop adequately, depriving her unborn child, Matthew, of vital nutrition.
With urgency, Matthew was brought into the world via forceps, his fragile form whisked away to the PIH Health Whittier Hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). "I never saw nor held him that day," Kristyn recounts, her voice tinged with the memory's poignancy.
Days turned into a week as Kristyn anxiously awaited the chance to see and hold her newborn son. Finally, the moment arrived, and she peered into the isolette, watching as Matthew stirred with newfound strength. "This baby is a fighter," remarked a passing doctor, offering a glimmer of hope amid uncertainty.

Each passing day in the NICU marked a triumph as Matthew grew stronger. On the 10th day – Mother's Day of 1979 – Kristyn cradled her son in her arms, a testament to resilience and love. "He started gaining weight every day," she recalls, a note of pride evident in her voice.
Now, 45 years later, Matthew stands as a beacon of health and vitality. "God put him through the test as a baby," Kristyn reflects, gratitude infusing her words. "Every hospital needs a NICU," she asserts, acknowledging the vital role such facilities play in safeguarding the most vulnerable lives. Matthew has grown into a self-employed husband and a father of two little girls, further exemplifying the resilience that began in the NICU.
Through Kristyn's journey, we glimpse the indomitable spirit of motherhood, a testament to hope, resilience, and the enduring power of love.
