When you live with lymphedema, enjoy a higher quality of life with the help of certified therapists at PIH Health.
Lymphedema is swelling caused by too much lymph fluid building up in an area of the body.
What Causes Lymphedema?
Some people are born with lymphedema. Swelling may also be a result of damage to the lymph nodes from surgery, cancer, radiation treatment or injury.
Symptoms Of Lymphedema
Talk to your doctor about lymphedema therapy if your arms or legs have:
- Lost flexibility
- Pain or numbness
Rely on the proven complete decongestive therapy (CDT) program at PIH Health to relieve swelling caused by lymphedema. CDT treatment involves manual lymph drainage (MLD) performed by a certified therapist. Your therapist will use hands-on procedures to reduce any excess fluid.
Your First Appointment
During your first visit, a CDT therapist will start with an evaluation. You’ll learn about the condition and your treatment options. You’ll discuss any health challenges you have and ways you can care for yourself.
Follow-up visits may take place over a couple of weeks. You’ll learn how to:
- Exercise regularly
- Place compression bandaging
- Reduce chronic pain and swelling
- Return to many of your daily activities
- Take care of your condition independently
- Take care of your skin
Involve your loved ones right from the start since lymphedema is a condition that needs management for the rest of your life. Living successfully with lymphedema depends on you and people who help care for you.
