The New Graduate RN programs are offered three times a year. Position availability is dependent on unit specific hiring needs.

Requirements for the New Graduate RN Residency Program

  • A new graduate or an RN with less than one year of experience in any area by the start of the program​
  • Active California registered nurse license required at least two weeks before residency start date​
  • Current, active basic life support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association​

Additional certifications may be required depending on the hiring unit

How many new grads does PIH Health Downey Hospital accept?​

The number of new grad RNs we accept varies by cohort, but on average, we hire about 15 nurses per residency program. 

What units will be accepting new grads?

Availability may vary by cohort, but the following units typically accept new grad RNs: ​

  • Medical Surgical​
  • Telemetry ​
  • DOU​
  • Note: Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may occasionally hire new grads based on unit needs.

Do I get to choose my shift preference?

You’ll be able to select your preferred unit and shift.  ​

What documents do I need to submit when I apply?

A resume is required. Other documents, such as a cover letter, letters of recommendation, or a portfolio, are optional.

Can I apply to the New Grad Residency Program if I don’t have my RN license yet?

Yes! You’re welcome to apply before you have your RN license. However, you must have an active RN license at least two weeks prior to the start of your cohort in order to begin the program. Be sure to plan your NCLEX test date accordingly to meet this requirement. 

How much will I get paid?

New graduate nurses receive a fixed hourly rate based on their nursing degree, plus a shift differential depending on their work hours.​

  • Associate of Science in nursing = $50.50 per hour.​
  • Bachelor of Science in nursing = $51.50 per hour.​
  • Master of Science in nursing = $52.50 per hour.​

Shift Differential:​

  • Night shift: Additional $7.00 per hour
