PIH Health SMS Terms & Conditions

These SMS Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern the text messaging services (“SMS Services”) provided by PIH Health, including PIH Health Whittier Hospital, PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, PIH Health Physicians, PIH Health Home Health, and PIH Health Hospice (collectively, “PIH Health,” “we,” “our,” or “us”).

By opting in to receive SMS messages from PIH Health, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge that SMS messages may include protected health information (“PHI”).

1. Program Description & Scope of SMS Services

When you sign up for text messages from PIH Health, you are signing up to receive text messages related to your relationship with PIH Health and its affiliated entities. These messages may include, but are not limited to, the following use cases (as identified in PIH Health’s Hello World SMS short code registration):

Visit Management & Care Coordination

  • Appointment reminders
  • eCheck-In prompts
  • Admission notifications and updates
  • Scheduling and rescheduling offers (e.g., Fast Pass / scheduling tickets)
  • Prompts to start E-Visits or Video Visits
  • Case reminders and updates
  • Surgery updates to designated family members
  • After-visit summaries

Financial Experience

  • Statement and balance notifications
  • Payment confirmations and payment plan updates
  • Price estimates and financial assistance notifications
  • Trust account management

MyChart Notifications

  • New messages, letters, and lab result notifications
  • Research invitations
  • Advance directive updates
  • Health maintenance reminders
  • Questionnaire or document notifications

Account & Security Management

  • One-time passcodes and two-factor authentication
  • New sign-in alerts, unsuccessful login attempts, and locked account notifications
  • Password resets, phone verification, and contact information updates
  • MyChart activation and proxy invitations

Care Management

  • Task reminders
  • Care plan updates
  • Daily digests, care gap reminders, and targeted outreach

Prescription Management

  • Prescription refill reminders and refill status notifications

Other Authorized Notifications

  • Emergency or disaster notifications, as permitted by law
  • One-time transactional messages (e.g., authentication codes or secure video visit links)

Message frequency may vary based on your interaction with PIH Health.

2. Consent & Opt-In

By providing your mobile phone number and opting in, you expressly authorize PIH Health to send SMS messages (including automated messages) to the number provided.

Opt-in may occur through:

  • Patient or guarantor registration
  • Enrollment through MyChart
  • Keyword opt-in (e.g., texting START to the PIH Health short code)

After opting in, you will receive a confirmation message similar to:

“You’ve signed up to receive text messages from PIH Health. Msg & data rates may apply. Msg frequency may vary. Text HELP for help or STOP to opt out.”

3. Opt-Out & HELP Instructions

You may opt out of SMS messages at any time by texting STOP to the PIH Health short code.
After texting STOP, you will receive one final message confirming that you have been unsubscribed. You will no longer receive SMS messages from that short code unless you opt in again.

To rejoin the SMS program, sign up again through MyChart or text START to the short code.

4. Message Frequency & Costs

  • Message frequency varies based on your care and account activity.
  • Message and data rates may apply for messages sent to you and messages sent from you to PIH Health.

5. Carrier Disclaimer

Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

6. Privacy & Security

  • SMS messages may contain PHI and are handled in accordance with HIPAA privacy and security requirements based on your consent.
  • Messages are sent only to patients, proxies, or guarantors who have a mobile number on file and have opted in to SMS communications.
  • Information gathered through the SMS program will not be shared for marketing purposes.

7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)

  • SMS communications are used solely for treatment, payment, and healthcare operations.
  • PIH Health does not sell SMS data or share it for marketing purposes.
  • California residents may exercise their rights to access, delete, or restrict the use of personal information as permitted by law.

8. Message Content & Branding

  • SMS messages will identify PIH Health as the sender.
  • Messages may include secure links related to scheduling, billing, or patient care.
  • Messages will include opt-out language such as:
    “Reply STOP to opt out.”

9. Legal Limitations & Liability

PIH Health, it’s subsidiaries, venders and agents are not responsible for SMS transmission errors, delivery failures, or technical issues. SMS messages may be accessible to anyone with access to your mobile device.

10. Changes to These Terms

PIH Health may revise these Terms at any time. Updated Terms will be posted on our website and will apply to all future SMS opt-ins.
