Lung & Thoracic Services

Health conditions that affect the lungs and areas of the chest except the heart are treated by lung and thoracic (chest) doctors and specialists. Your chest is the area of your body between your neck and your abdomen. Organs and structures inside the chest include the heart, lungs, esophagus, ribs and breastbone. The pleura, a large thin sheet of tissue, lines the chest cavity and aids in breathing.

One-of-a-Kind Lung Surgery

Typical lung surgery requires a large opening in the chest wall, which can be painful and take a long time to heal. One of our skilled surgeons, Dr. Eduardo A. Tovar, FACS—who’s also Medical Director at PIH Health—developed a revolutionary lung surgery technique that’s performed only at PIH Health.

The advanced procedure uses just a small opening between two ribs to reach the lungs with a tiny surgical instrument. A miniature video camera within the special tool allows our surgeons to see the area clearly and precisely guide their movements. Benefits include less pain and faster recovery. Most patients go home the same day they have the surgery.
