Nutrition Services

Nutrition means making sure your body has enough of the right food to keep you healthy and well. Good health begins with good nutrition. A healthy diet is the foundation for wellness. It’s also an important part of treating disease and illness.

Good Food for Healthy Living

At PIH Health, you’ll find two types of dietary specialists with certifications in the field—Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians, registered (DTR). These professionals offer outpatient medical nutrition therapy to adults and children dealing with health conditions that require special attention to the food they eat. RDs and DTRs turn the science of nutrition into good food for healthy living.

What Is a Registered Dietitian?

Registered dietitians are experts with college-level education in nutrition, dietetics, public health or related fields. They complete a supervised internship approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. They also continue their education throughout their careers to keep their knowledge and certification up to date.

What Is a Dietetic Technician, Registered?

Dietetic Technicians, registered (DTR), have extensive training in nutrition and work under the supervision of a registered dietitian. You’ll find them in many different settings—hospitals, schools, nursing homes, retirement centers, hospices or research sites—where they conduct health screenings. They also collect health information, provide patient education and help RDs deliver medical nutrition therapy.

How to Schedule an Appointment

In most cases, your doctor must provide a referral or a prescription with a diagnosis for you to receive nutrition counseling at PIH Health. Download, print and take our Outpatient Nutrition Referral Form to your doctor’s office. Ask your doctor to complete the form and send it to us at the fax number listed.

To set up an appointment, call the PIH Health Clinical Nutrition office at 562.698.0811 Ext. 11320.

A doctor’s referral helps make sure you receive as much insurance coverage as possible for the nutrition services you need. If you don’t have a physician referral, you may still schedule an appointment and pay cash instead of using insurance coverage.
