Lymphedema Therapy

When too much protein-rich fluid (lymph) accumulates in an area of the body, it causes swelling (lymphedema).

The swelling happens for many reasons. Two of the most common are:

  • Congenital issues (primary lymphedema from health conditions present at birth)
  • Damage to lymph nodes from surgery, radiation or trauma (secondary lymphedema)

Help to Manage Swelling

At PIH Health, you can rely on our proven program of complete decongestive therapy (CDT) to help with the swelling of lymphedema. The treatment involves manual lymph drainage (MLD) performed by our certified CDT/MLD therapists. Therapists use hands-on procedures to direct the excess fluid to healthy lymph nodes. The process helps reduce the swelling of lymphedema.

Other parts of CDT treatment for lymphedema include:

  • Compression bandaging
  • Proper skin care
  • Regular exercise

Lymphedema is a condition that must be managed for the rest of your life. Living successfully with lymphedema depends on you and people who help care for you. We encourage your caregivers to get involved right from the start. With the highly successful CDT treatment and good self-care, you can continue to live an enjoyable life.

How CDT & MLD Help You Manage Lymphedema

During your first visit, our CDT therapist will start with an evaluation. You’ll also learn about the condition and your treatment options. We’ll review any health challenges you have and focus how you can care for yourself.

Follow-up visits may be spread out over a couple of weeks. You’ll learn how to do compression bandaging and how to take good care of your skin. We’ll also show you some exercises you can use regularly to help reduce swelling. Our program is designed to help you:

  • Reduce chronic pain and swelling
  • Independently take care of your condition
  • Return to many of your daily activities
