What it means to be a Comprehensive Stroke Center

Being a Comprehensive Stroke Center is the highest honor that a Stroke Center can receive. It recognizes that the program has met the rigorous requirements that sets it apart from other hospitals. It means that patients have all of the resources they need to address their condition, from the moment they arrive at the hospital to the moment they transition to acute rehabilitation. Our staff has undergone specialized training to ensure that they are up to date with the latest practices of treating stroke symptoms.

When treating a stroke, time is of the essence. Rest assured that you are in the right hands with PIH Health. As soon as a stroke alert goes out, members of our stroke team are ready, either in the emergency department or other areas of the hospital to aid the patient. The stroke team works closely with Emergency Medical Services and stays in constant communication to ensure that staff is ready to respond as soon as the patient arrives at the hospital. By carefully assessing the situation, our highly trained physicians and staff are able to offer stroke patients a wide range of treatment options based on their condition; including stroke medications such as intravenous tPA as well as interventional techniques. Advanced imaging systems in our neurointerventional radiology suite help us save time while preserving valuable brain tissue, helping to identify the exact nature of the stroke.

Whether you or a loved one is experiencing stroke symptoms, you can be confident that PIH Health Hospital – Whittier’s multidisciplinary stroke team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, neurointensivists, and nurses are here to care for you around the clock. We can’t control when a stroke will happen, but we can certainly be prepared when it does. We know that every second counts and we will ensure that our patients receive the most advanced stroke treatments in a timely manner to minimize or eliminate any residual impact, leading to a smooth recovery and better quality of life for each patient after a stroke.
