5 Tips for Driving in the Rain

Photo of car driving on slippery roadDriving in the rain can be hazardous due to slippery road conditions, reduced visibility and the chance of hydroplaning or skidding. A significant rainstorm or even a small shower might cause traffic accidents on slick pavement. Avoid driving in the rain whenever possible, but if you find yourself on wet roads follow these tips to keep yourself safe:

Check your tires: Make sure your tires have enough tread for the best traction on the road. The front tires of your car lose tread quicker than the rear tires, which makes it easier to lose control of your vehicle in the rain. Rotate and replace your tires when needed for safe vehicle control, especially on wet roads.

Keep your distance: Make an effort to maintain more space between you and the car ahead when the weather is rainy. Doing so will allow you enough time to break safely if anything unexpected happens in front of you. Because water tends to collect in the outside lanes, stay in the center lane to avoid driving through deeper pools.

Avoid sudden movements: Drive smoothly in the rain to maintain the best level of control when accelerating, turning or braking. Steer clear of jerking the wheel, stomping the pedals and applying the brakes too late. When breaking, adjust your speed or direction gradually by letting off the gas pedal sooner than usual before softly applying the brakes.

Maintain visibility: Poor visibility frequently contributes to traffic accidents in wet weather. Utilize your defroster to keep your windows from fogging up and check your windshield wipers for a streak-free wipe. Ensure that other drivers can see you as well by cleaning debris off of your headlights, turn signals, brake lights and taillights.

Eye Exam: “Keep your eyes on the road at all times, but if you're struggling to read the signs on the road, in any weather, it may be time to schedule an eye exam,” explains PIH Health Physician Chester Cheng. Be extra cautious of reflected and scattered light in wet weather which can make it harder to see through glare and distortion while driving. Maintain good eye care when getting behind the wheel, rain or shine!
