Every Movement Matters: Precision Care in Gynecologic Cancer Surgery

A diagnosis of uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancer can feel overwhelming. Patients are suddenly faced with complex decisions about treatment, recovery, and what the future may hold. Advances in surgical technology, however, are helping physicians provide safer, more precise care and giving patients new confidence as they move forward with treatment.

One of the most significant advances in recent years is robotic-assisted surgery. This approach allows surgeons to operate with exceptional precision, even in delicate areas deep within the pelvis where vital nerves and organs are located.

“Robotic technology gives us the ability to work with incredible accuracy,” said Samuel Im MD, PIH Health gynecologic surgeon. “It allows us to remove cancer while carefully preserving surrounding tissues whenever possible, which can make a meaningful difference in a patient’s recovery.”

For many women, robotic-assisted procedures can mean smaller incisions compared with traditional open surgery. Smaller incisions often lead to less blood loss, reduced risk of complications, and shorter hospital stays. Many patients are also able to return to their daily routines more quickly as their bodies heal.

But technology is only part of the story. Compassionate care and clear communication remain just as important in helping patients feel supported throughout their treatment journey.

Before surgery, physicians take time to walk patients through each step of the process. They explain what the procedure involves, how robotic technology is used, and what recovery may look like afterward. This collaborative approach helps patients understand their options and feel more prepared for the road ahead.

“Every patient’s situation is unique,” said Dr. Im. “Our goal is to create a personalized plan that addresses the cancer while also supporting the patient’s overall well-being and quality of life.”

For women facing gynecologic cancers, precision surgery combined with personalized care can make a powerful difference. With modern tools and experienced surgical teams, treatment is becoming more effective and more patient-centered.

Because when it comes to healing, every movement and every decision truly matters.
