Well Woman Exam Guidelines

Screenings are an important part of maintaining your health. They can detect disease when it's most treatable and prevent serious problems. There are guidelines that outline the appropriate screenings for your age, but your doctor will also consider your overall health, family history and current health concerns before making a recommendation for screenings.

What is a well woman visit and why are they important?

A well woman visit is different than a regular health visit to your doctor for sickness or an injury. This exam primarily focuses on preventative care for women. It is important to have an annual well woman visit even if you aren’t due for any health screenings. PIH Health OB/GYN, Julia Willner MD, says that “during a well woman visit, a patient will sometimes mention a symptom that seems very minor to her, but may be an indicator to me that further work up is indicated to ensure she is healthy”.

Identifying health issues early will lead to better outcomes and can literally add years to your life. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) provides a complete list exams & screening tests as well as immunizations and health topics, listed by age group.
