Mammograms and Millennials: The Importance of Early Screening

As more cases of breast cancer are being diagnosed in younger women, it’s crucial for millennials to take a proactive approach to breast health. Guidelines recommend that women begin routine screening mammography at age 40, especially for those at average risk. This update from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force comes in response to a growing number of breast cancer diagnoses in younger populations, emphasizing the need for earlier detection.

For women with elevated risk—based on personal or family history—screening should begin even earlier, typically around age 30. In some cases, supplemental screenings such as contrast-enhanced breast MRI may be recommended for women starting at age 25-30. The American College of Radiology suggests that women undergo a risk assessment by age 25 to help determine their personal screening schedule.

“Breast health starts with awareness,” says Kimberly Bickell MD, PIH Health Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Radiologist. “Understanding your risk and taking early action through screening mammograms and supplemental screening when appropriate, can make a significant difference in early detection and outcomes.”

Self-awareness is another essential tool in breast health. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women practice breast self-awareness, which involves being familiar with the normal appearance and feel of their breasts. This way, any changes can be detected early and evaluated by a doctor.

For millennials, taking responsibility for breast health means more than just scheduling an annual mammogram. It’s about being informed, understanding risk factors, and knowing when and how to act. By starting early, you can help ensure better outcomes and reduce the risk of advanced breast cancer.

Dr. Bickell excelled at science and loved people. She found her passion in a profession that married both. “As a dedicated breast imager, I get tremendous satisfaction from meeting and talking to patients, hearing their stories and providing comfort during what can be a scary time. I also find it rewarding that routine annual screening can detect tiny breast cancers before they grow,” she says. Dr. Bickell enjoys spending time with her two young daughters. She supports the American Cancer Society and local organizations that provide services to disadvantaged children. Her hobbies include reading, playing piano, skiing and sailing.
