Men: Don’t Miss This Surprising Sign of Heart Disease

Mens Health Awareness Erectile dysfunction, commonly known as ED, is often associated with aging or stress. But did you know that it could also be a surprising sign of heart disease?

Many people are unaware that they have heart disease until they experience a severe cardiac-related event such as a heart attack or stroke. However, men experiencing ED should view the condition as a possible early indicator of heart complications.

How are the two conditions linked? There are several similarities between erectile dysfunction and heart disease. “Coronary artery disease, which causes the gradual accumulation of plaque in the arteries, can reduce blood flow to the heart and other areas of the body, resulting in a condition called atherosclerosis. Both ED and heart disease are caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries,” explains PIH Health Cardiologist Gerald Beckham.

ED is often the result of damage to the arteries of the penis. Because the arteries of this organ are much smaller than the arteries of the heart, atherosclerosis is more likely to happen there before affecting the larger arteries of the heart.

Moreover, the risk factors for both conditions are quite similar. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking and excessive alcohol use. Men with low testosterone levels may also be at a higher risk of developing both ED and heart disease.

Although having ED does not guarantee that you have heart disease or that you will experience heart disease in the future, it is essential to be aware of the potential link between the two conditions. By understanding the link between ED and heart disease, you can take steps to protect your heart and overall health.

If you are experiencing ED, it is best to talk to your doctor about getting screened for heart disease. To find a physician visit PIHHealth.org/Doctors.
