Simple Ways to Exercise Indoors When It’s Cold or Raining
When the temperature starts dropping, it’s difficult to get motivated to exercise. Exercising is hard enough without the rain to keep you from the gym. For those days when you just don’t want to leave the house, we offer tips to help you work out in the comfort of your home.
- Make sure the floor you’re exercising on is flat and even. Use a mat if necessary to protect your joints and back.
- Drink plenty of water. It’s tempting to drink hot tea or cocoa in the winter but stick to just water during the workout.
- Turn up the music and dance. You can even do double duty by dancing and cleaning at the same time.
- If you live in a multi-story house, you can jog up and down the stairs. No stairs, no problem, use the largest book you have or a step stool to step up and down.
- Lunges are easy to do down a hallway or from room to room.
- Jumping jacks and jump rope are reminiscent of elementary school but it’s also a great all-body, cardio exercise.
- For weight training, use water bottles. If they are too light, switch to water-filled milk jugs. You can customize them by filling the jugs to the exact weight you need.
- For runners, running indoors is awkward. Most houses don’t have enough space and running in place can get boring. A good option is high knees. It really gets the heart going, especially if you go double time.
Exercising should be a part of your lifestyle. Just like washing your hair or clipping your nails, so add it to your weekly schedule. Don’t use winter as an excuse to stop exercising.
