Simple Ways to Minimize Your Carbon Footprint

Graphic for Earth Day AwarenessWhy does reducing your carbon footprint matter? Because it can affect the well-being of the planet and yourself. It can mitigate the effect of climate change and improve public health by reducing carbon emissions. Here are a few simple ways to help the planet.

Turn off lights

Leaving the lights on is an easy way to waste energy. So, whenever you leave a room, remember to turn off the lights. And, if your room gets a lot of natural light, leave the lights off.

Take shorter showers

If you take a 15-minute shower and a standard shower head in California uses 1.8 gallons of water per minute, you’ve used almost 27 gallons. By just reducing your shower time by 5 minutes, you could save about 9 gallons.

Walk or bike when you can

If you’re going somewhere that is only a five-minute drive, consider walking or biking to your destination. Not only will you reduce carbon emissions, but it’s a great way to exercise!

Ditch the plastics

Most discarded plastic ends up in landfills and even the ocean. It can take almost 1,000 years to decompose. Some of the easiest ways to eliminate waste are using reusable water bottles or tote bags instead of plastic.

Recycle or compost

Recycle paper, cans, old electronics, and plastic containers whenever possible. Composting can save landfill space and reduce gas emissions. And it’s a great way to start gardening as it can help the soil retain moisture and nutrients.

Reducing your carbon footprint can benefit you and the planet. Whether it’s reducing energy bills or taking a 20-minute walk to get a cup of coffee, know that you’re helping sustain our planet.
