Your No-Stress Guide for Back-to-School Season

Summer may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean the back-to-school season has to wind you up. From shifting sleep schedules to school supply shopping, the transition can feel overwhelming, but with a little prep and the right mindset, you can make it feel easier.

Here’s how to help your family head back into the school year calm, cool, and stress-free.

Head to bed earlier. During summer, bedtime routines often drift later, making the return to early school mornings a challenge. “Rather than shifting overnight, help your child adjust gradually by moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few days, shares PIH Health Physician Robert Boonyaputthikul DO. “This slow transition helps reset their internal clock, making mornings smoother and reducing first-week fatigue.”

Shop Sooner. Avoid the last-minute scramble by checking off your school supply list early. Picking out a new backpack, supplies, and a first-day outfit can help build excitement for the year ahead. Once everything’s ready, turn it into a fun moment: pack the backpack, plan a few outfits, and organize supplies together. A little early prep goes a long way in calming nerves and giving your child a confident start to the school year.

Talk through any worries. Back-to-school anxiety is common, especially for kids starting a new school. Ask kids how they’re feeling and let them know it’s normal to be nervous. Talk through what the first day might look like and how they can handle challenges like not knowing where to go or what to do.

Get organized together. Set the tone for a smooth school year by creating a shared calendar or visual schedule. Include important dates like picture day, field trips, and extracurricular activities. Post it somewhere visible so the whole family can stay on track. Involving kids in planning helps them feel more in control and prepared for what’s ahead.

Prepare nutritious meals. When the school routine kicks in, mornings can get hectic fast. Planning meals ahead of time can ease the rush and ensure your child starts the day with the energy they need to stay focused. Prepare a few nutritious, easy-to-make breakfast options and stock up on lunchbox staples.

Schedule check-ups. Back-to-school season is the perfect time to schedule your child’s annual wellness visit. It’s a simple way to ensure they are current on immunizations, hitting developmental milestones, and staying healthy physically and emotionally. If your child is gearing up for team sports, it’s also a great opportunity to schedule a sports physical. To find a doctor, visit to PIHHealth.org/Doctors
