5 Foot Health Tips

Photo of doctor looking at a footIt is easy to take your feet for granted. However, with 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and multiple tendons per foot, there is a lot to take care of. According to the California Podiatric Medical Association, 75 percent of Americans will experience foot health problems at some point in their lives. Maintaining proper foot health is important because of the potential consequences such as increased risk for athlete’s foot and bunions. PIH Health podiatry experts are experienced in a variety of foot conditions for adults and children.

What can I do to improve my foot health?

Maintaining proper foot health can be simple and straightforward. Ken C. Nguyen DPM, a podiatrist at PIH Health provides a few tips on taking care of your feet:

  1. Inspecting your feet at least once a week is a great way to start improving foot health. Check for bumps, bruises, sores and cracked skin.
  2. Check your shoes. They might be too tight or not fit your feet optimally and may be causing discomfort and deformities. Try to limit the time you wear shoes that do not fit optimally, if possible.
  3. Check your socks. Sweat glands in your feet can produce up to half a pint of moisture, so you may want to consider socks made from materials that wick away moisture. This will help prevent bacteria growth because bacteria thrive in dark, damp environments.
  4. Practice good hygiene. Foot hygiene routines should consist of washing your feet with soap and water, drying thoroughly afterward and applying moisturizer as needed. This also includes clipping your toenails correctly and disinfecting nail clippers after each use if shared.
  5. Try foot exercises. There are muscles in your feet which can be stretched and strengthened to support your movements, however, consult a podiatry specialist first to see if this is right for you.
