5 Home Modifications to Reduce Risk of Falls

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of four Americans fall each year. Many of these falls can cause serious injuries like broken bones in the wrist, arm, ankle and hip fractures. 

Each year, more than three million older Americans are rushed to the emergency room to be treated for fall injuries. More than 800,000 Americans are hospitalized because of a fall injury and falls are also the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries. It’s important to reduce our risk of falls.

One way to reduce the risk is to make home modifications that can keep our surroundings safe. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Use nonslip mats in your bathroom and kitchen. This helps with safety and keeping your balance on smooth surfaces.
  • Remove low furniture like coffee tables, plant stands and magazine racks from high-traffic areas. These items can cause safety hazards for older Americans.
  • Place night lights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms, and everywhere you may walk in the dark. Make well-lit, unobscured paths to light switches and consider installing illuminated switches.
  • Make sure that objects like clothes are always easy to reach so you can avoid obstacles.
  • Install handrails and guardrails to prevent falls.
