Get your flu shotHeading into the Holiday seasons, it’s easy to lose focus on preventative health. Schedules are packed with kids back in school and youth sports like soccer and football, are in full swing. Cooling temperatures are just around the corner and with that comes flu season. But don’t fret…it’s time to get vaccinated.  According to Elisabeth Brown MD, flu shots are the best way to protect against seasonal flu.  

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, everyone six months of age or older should be vaccinated. While most people can benefit from a flu shot, vaccinations are especially important for certain people with elevated risks of flu complications including young children, older adults and pregnant women. Other conditions that increase complications of the flu include asthma, diabetes and obesity.  

The flu is most prevalent from November into April of the following year. It may take at least two weeks for a flu shot vaccination to begin working. Try to get an appointment by early November. Getting a flu vaccination is simple – it is typically one shot in the arm. The vaccination for 2016-2017 will protect against H1N1 and at least two other influenza viruses that are expected to impact our community.

Check with your doctor before getting a flu shot if you are allergic to eggs or if you have had a reaction previously.

You can still enjoy your family’s fall activities and cooler weather – just don’t forget your flu shot!
