The human endocrine system is made up of a number of glands, which release hormones to control many different functions of our organs and tissues.

“Our hormones regulate metabolism, respiration, growth, reproduction, sensory perception and movement,” said Asma Hasan MD, an endocrinologist with PIH Health. “And a hormone unbalance may be the underlying cause of a wide range of medical conditions.”

At PIH Health, our endocrinologists are licensed internal medicine doctors who have passed an additional certification exam. They are equipped to treat a range of endocrine disorders and dysfunctions by evaluating the relationship between nutrition and human disease. They work closely with other specialties to improve and maintain a patient’s health.

Endocrinologists commonly treat the following conditions:

The main goal of an endocrinologist is to help patients achieve hormonal balance within the body. When consulting with an endocrinologist, they may ask about current medications, family history of hormonal problems, other medical conditions and dietary habits. They will also check the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, and look at the condition of skin, hair, teeth and mouth. Blood and urine samples may be taken during the appointment.

Based on diagnosis, a custom treatment plan will be provided to each patient that includes medication, diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.

Endocrinology services are offered at two PIH Health locations; PIH Health Bloomfield Medical Office Building in Santa Fe Springs and Washington Medical Office Building in Whittier. Visit PIHHealth.org/Endo to learn more.
