Facts and Myths About Celery

Here are six facts and myths about celery:

1.    Myth: Celery is a negative calorie food.

There is no such thing as a negative calorie food and eating celery will not burn off any calories. Celery contains about 16.01 calories per 100 grams.

2.    Fact: Eating celery keeps you full and prevents cravings.

Celery is dense in water and is considered a high-fiber food. Eating food with these attributes will help keep you feeling full for a longer period of time and therefore, helps curb cravings.

3.    Fact: Celery is good for digestive health.

The compounds in celery, including apiuman and pectin-based polysaccharides, have proven to decrease the chances of stomach ulcers, improve the lining in the stomach and reduce stomach secretions.

4.    Myth: There are no side effects from celery based supplements.

According to WebMD, although there may be benefits from celery based supplements, they still have some side effects. Women who are pregnant and breast feeding should restrain from taking medicine that contains celery oil and celery seeds. There isn’t enough reliable evidence to know if it is safe to consume celery oil and seeds during the pregnancy or breast feeding stages, so it’s safer to avoid use. 5.    Myth: Celery is a love-causing veggie.

When you think of romantic veggies, you probably aren’t thinking celery. However, in traditional 18th Century stories, from Odyssey to Tristan and Iseult, celery was used as a love potion. Researchers have now squashed this myth and believe the “celery love potion” only generated a placebo effect. 

6.    Fact: Celery reduces inflammation and helps with conditions related to orthopedics.

Celery is known to have approximately 25 anti-inflammatory compounds that help reduce different types of inflammation in the body. It can help relieve conditions linked to chronic inflammation, like osteoporosis and arthritis.

“Celery is a great low-calorie snack on its own or it can also be added to a healthy recipe,” says Andrew Imparato MD, PIH Health Family Medicine. “The fiber in celery can benefit not only your digestive health as stated above, but it also helps to improve the cardiovascular system.”
