Game Changing Weight Loss

Photo of patientMany people struggle with weight loss and don’t know where to start – trying different diet plans and/or working out that haven’t helped. Eddie Marquez, a collegiate and high school football referee, found himself in this exact situation.

Outside of his normal day job, he loves refereeing high school and college football games but found himself tired and out of breath. He realized his body had changed and he had very little energy. At a doctor’s visit, he found he developed high blood pressure, diabetes, irregular hormone levels and sleep apnea. This caused him even more stress.

Frustrated and feeling discouraged because his usual dieting and exercise regimen just wasn’t working for him anymore, he desperately needed help. At a visit with his primary care doctor, Elisabeth S. Brown MD, he asked about Bariatric surgery – whether or not he was a good candidate – and she said yes. He was then referred to PIH Health Bariatric Surgeon, Justin D. Braverman MD.

Dr. Braverman explained, “Not only did Eddie meet the medical criteria for weight loss surgery, he also showed the willingness needed to make the necessary lifestyle modifications for long-term weight loss success.”

Eddie looked at all his bariatric surgery options:

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Adjustable Gastric Band

How is Eddie doing today?

Eddie told us, “For me, the surgery was just a tool. It’s a whole mentality shift and lifestyle change that I was more than ready for. I’ve been successful losing more than 100 pounds. I’m happy where I’m at and I feel fantastic. I have my life back.”

Today, Eddie’s blood pressure and cholesterol are excellent, and he’s no longer diabetic. His testosterone levels are normal and his sleep apnea is gone. In addition, he has tons of energy to run up and down the field and keep up with high-performance athletes.

For many overweight individuals, bariatric surgery may be an option to live a healthier life. If you or a loved one would like to learn more or schedule a consultation, visit PIHHealth.org/Bariatrics or call 562.789.5444.
