Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology (IR), a medical sub-specialty of radiology, is one of the most exciting and promising areas of medicine today. It uses image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in almost every organ system. IR refers to a wide range of techniques to precisely target therapy. These techniques include advanced X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The IR department at PIH Health offers patients advanced procedures using the least invasive techniques available. Diseases and conditions that can be treated with IR include certain cancers, cardiovascular problems and stroke to name just a few.

Interventional radiologists are medical doctors with an additional six or seven years of specialized training following medical school. All the IR physicians at PIH Health have advanced training in either interventional radiology or interventional neuroradiology, areas officially recognized by the American Medical Association.  “Our focus is quality patient care, superior outcomes and the highest level of patient satisfaction,” said Yong H. Park MD, vascular interventional radiologist and medical director of radiology at PIH Health Hospital - Downey.

Working with a highly trained team of nurses and technologists, interventional radiologists utilize advanced imaging equipment to navigate catheters, wires and various devices throughout the body to treat patients with conditions that either required open surgery or were impossible to treat in the past. IR procedures tend to be less risky, less painful and offer far shorter recovery times compared to traditional open surgeries.

In addition to the most advanced procedures, a full complement of routine image guided procedures such as biopsies and catheter placements are also provided.
