Nutritous foodsMarch is National Nutrition Month—a time to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.

When did National Nutrition Month Begin?

National Nutrition Month was created as an education and information campaign by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (ADA) in March 1973. Since its inception, the ADA has created annual themes to send nutrition education messages to the public. This year’s theme is “Go Further with Food!”

What is a Healthy Eating Plan?

A balanced diet and physical activity are essential to stay well and live a healthy lifestyle. But what exactly is considered a healthy eating plan? According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020, a healthy eating plan consists of the following:

  • Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
  • Lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts;
  • Low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars; and
  • Stays within your daily calorie needs

“Good nutrition is the foundation to good health—it provides our body with the essential nutrients needed to function daily. Practicing good nutrition can prevent, improve, and even eliminate certain medical conditions,” said Rubiceli Hernandez MSN, FNP-BC, PIH Health Family Nurse Practitioner. “Thankfully, we live in an area of the world, where we have access to a variety of fresh nutritious foods. Invest in yourself, eat for your health, and Go Further with Food!”

To learn more about nutrition and physical activity, sign up for PIH Health’s next Better Choices – Better Health community health education program—a free, six-week program where you can create your own action plan to help improve your quality of life.

  • Ideas for eating healthier
  • Label reading
  • Healthy portion sizing and
  • Ways to become more active through exercises that are right for you
