Staying Healthy at any Age

Here are some good reminders to help women stay healthy.

Get a regular check-up: Visit a licensed healthcare professional for a well-woman yearly check-up to receive preventative screenings. Your healthcare professional can offer tips and advice for each stage of your life, from family planning to menopause and beyond.

Stay Active: Physical activity each day can help you look and feel your best. Everyone should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day, according to the Office on Women’s Health. Women of all ages can benefit from staying active. Learn more about different types of exercise, how activity affects PMS and your menstrual cycle, nutrition and how to avoid injury by visiting womenshealth.gov/getting-active.

Eat Healthy: Eating healthfully is another way you can look and feel your best. “Choose foods that are high in fiber, such as whole grains and fruit, and include colorful foods in your daily diet, such as nutrient-rich green leafy vegetables, blueberries and carrots,” explains Elisabeth D. Brown MD.

“Your body also needs regular servings of lean protein to build and maintain muscle mass, which is important as you age. You can find sources of protein in beans and legumes, seeds and nuts, eggs and yogurt, or fish, poultry and beef.”

Read food labels carefully and avoid processed foods that contain high amounts of sodium, sugar, dyes and chemicals. If you choose to consume alcohol, limit your intake to one drink per day, and be sure to keep well hydrated by drinking water, rather than soda, sports drinks, or fruit juice. Be mindful of your mental health: Everyone experiences life’s ups and downs. Take care of your mental health by managing stress and getting enough sleep each night.

Avoid unhealthy behaviors: Avoid unhealthful behaviors such as smoking, texting while driving, riding in a car without a seat belt, or riding a bike without a helmet. You have one body, so take care of it! Limit screen time, spend time with family and friends, learn a new hobby and get outdoors into the fresh air (remember to apply sunscreen first!). Make time to laugh and enjoy life.

Following these steps is a foundation for a lifetime of good health, no matter your age. Take the opportunity during Women’s Health Week to evaluate your attitude toward your own health, and make adjustments if necessary.
