The Importance of Men’s Health Screenings

graphic showing mens healthMost children see their doctors on a regular basis while they are growing up, but when they grow into adulthood, men do not visit the doctor as regularly as women.

According to MedlinePlus.gov, men should visit their primary care physician annually for the following screenings and disease prevention:

Men ages of 18 to 39:

  • Diabetes screening.
  • Cholesterol screening.
  • Heart disease prevention.
  • Immunizations.
  • Blood pressure screening.
  • Infectious disease screening, depending on lifestyle and medical history.

Your doctor may ask about some aspects of your lifestyle, such as diet and exercise or your alcohol, tobacco and drug use. An annual eye exam and dental exam is also recommended.

Men ages 40 to 64 should see their doctor about the items listed above, plus:

  • Colorectal cancer.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Prostate cancer.
  • Lung cancer, depending on certain criteria.
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (smokers or previous smokers).
  • Hearing test.

Finally, men over the age of 65 will also see their doctor for:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (smokers or previous smokers).
  • Hearing test.
