You hear it everywhere, people talking about their resolutions; their new plans for the future—or perhaps—what habits they hope to give up. Whether it is breaking old patterns, losing 20 pounds, avoiding carbs or working fewer hours, we all have goals. Here’s a list of ways to help you prepare for your new start!

It’s a Lifestyle Change, Not a New Routine

Step one is important to jump starting your resolutions. Think of it more as a lifestyle change, not just a new diet or new habit to incorporate. Start by writing down your projection. Decide what you want and get ready to plan for it.

Get up, and Move!

Any new thing we try can seem daunting, but the more we procrastinate the further we are from starting our new lifestyle and ultimately succeeding at our goal. For example, you may want to lose weight, but instead of signing up for the gym or purchasing a new pair of proper running shoes, you make excuses for how cold it is outside, how tired you are, how you worked late, or how you’ll start tomorrow. “No one can help you better than you can help yourself, so take that first step and get in the rhythm of taking action. The rest will follow,” said PIH Health Family Medicine physician Andrew Chao DO.

Think Positively

Never compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter 20. We never know another person’s journey, which is why it’s best to focus on your own. Think of why you created this resolution and tell yourself positive affirmations to keep on track. Additionally, surround yourself with like-minded individuals.

Meet New People

When we aren’t sure what steps to take, we often take a step back or stand stagnant. Instead, get out and meet new people. Join a local city group for hikers, coffee-goers or anything you are interested in. Being around people with similar interests, will not only bring you out of your shell, but also motivate you to incorporate your new lifestyle choices, regularly.

Be a Storybook of Your Own Life

Whether a person, job, or circumstance entered your life and is no longer around, take that as an opportunity for growth. Many things are given to us as gifts to teach us about what we need to do next in our lives. Never let an old circumstance prohibit you from writing the next chapter. After all, what’s a resolution without letting go of the past?
